Faith Under Pressure · Session 12 of 14
Rest, worship, and human limits
Step 1
Read
Exodus 20:8–11; Mark 2:23–3:6
Use your preferred translation.
What does rest reveal about our dependence on God and our responsibility toward people?
Step 2
Observe
- What does the passage say? Restate it in your own words before interpreting it.
- Who is speaking, and to whom?
- What is the surrounding context — what comes just before and after?
- Which words or phrases repeat or stand out?
Step 3
Discuss
- The Sabbath command includes servants, foreigners, and animals. What does that show about who rest is for?
- Jesus says the Sabbath was made for man. How does He apply that in Mark 2–3?
- Why might refusing to rest be a form of distrust in God?
Step 4
Apply
What would it cost you to stop working for one full day? What does that cost reveal?
Step 5
Practice
Set aside a regular period of rest this week and protect it, including from screens and errands.
Step 6
Pray
Thank God that the world does not depend on your effort, and ask Him to teach you to rest.
Facilitator notes
- Invite participation without requiring personal disclosure.
- Let people disagree respectfully.
- Avoid speculation about someone’s salvation or explaining why a particular tragedy happened.
- Never pressure participants to describe trauma publicly.
- Discuss beliefs honestly without expecting any participant to represent an entire community.
