Living the Gospel Among Our Neighbors · Session 2 of 14
Every person bears God’s image
Step 1
Read
Genesis 1:26–27; James 3:7–12
Use your preferred translation.
How should another person’s dignity govern our speech and treatment of them?
Step 2
Observe
- What does the passage say? Restate it in your own words before interpreting it.
- Who is speaking, and to whom?
- What is the surrounding context — what comes just before and after?
- Which words or phrases repeat or stand out?
Step 3
Discuss
- What does it mean that all people, not only believers, are made in God’s image?
- James says we bless God and curse people made in His likeness. Why does he find this contradictory?
- In what settings — online, in traffic, at work — do we most easily forget another person’s dignity?
Step 4
Apply
Whom have you spoken about this week in a way that denied their dignity?
Step 5
Practice
For one week, refuse to use contemptuous labels for any group or person, including those you disagree with.
Step 6
Pray
Ask God to help you see every person as made in His image and to guard your tongue.
Facilitator notes
- Invite participation without requiring personal disclosure.
- Let people disagree respectfully.
- Avoid speculation about someone’s salvation or explaining why a particular tragedy happened.
- Never pressure participants to describe trauma publicly.
- Discuss beliefs honestly without expecting any participant to represent an entire community.
