Living the Gospel Among Our Neighbors · Session 3 of 14
Truth spoken with gentleness
Step 1
Read
1 Peter 3:15–16; Colossians 4:2–6
Use your preferred translation.
How can we explain our hope without turning a person into an argument to win?
Step 2
Observe
- What does the passage say? Restate it in your own words before interpreting it.
- Who is speaking, and to whom?
- What is the surrounding context — what comes just before and after?
- Which words or phrases repeat or stand out?
Step 3
Discuss
- Peter says to be prepared to give a reason for hope “with gentleness and respect.” Why does manner matter as much as content?
- Paul asks for prayer to make the message clear. Why does clarity require prayer?
- What does it look like for speech to be “seasoned with salt”?
Step 4
Apply
When you last talked about faith with someone who disagrees, did you listen to understand them?
Step 5
Practice
Write a few sentences explaining your hope in Christ in plain words, as if to a curious friend.
Step 6
Pray
Ask God for clarity, gentleness, and respect when you speak about Him.
Facilitator notes
- Invite participation without requiring personal disclosure.
- Let people disagree respectfully.
- Avoid speculation about someone’s salvation or explaining why a particular tragedy happened.
- Never pressure participants to describe trauma publicly.
- Discuss beliefs honestly without expecting any participant to represent an entire community.
