Living the Gospel Among Our Neighbors · Session 1 of 14
Who is my neighbor?
Step 1
Read
Luke 10:25–37
Use your preferred translation.
Whose need do we overlook because helping them complicates our loyalties?
Step 2
Observe
- What does the passage say? Restate it in your own words before interpreting it.
- Who is speaking, and to whom?
- What is the surrounding context — what comes just before and after?
- Which words or phrases repeat or stand out?
Step 3
Discuss
- The lawyer asks “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus ends by asking who proved to be a neighbor. Why change the question?
- What reasons might the priest and Levite have had for passing by? Which of those reasons do we share?
- Why might Jesus make the hero a Samaritan rather than an ordinary Israelite?
Step 4
Apply
Who is near you whose need you avoid because helping them would be inconvenient or awkward?
Step 5
Practice
Take one concrete step this week to help someone outside your usual circle.
Step 6
Pray
Ask God to open your eyes to the neighbor you have been passing by.
Facilitator notes
- Invite participation without requiring personal disclosure.
- Let people disagree respectfully.
- Avoid speculation about someone’s salvation or explaining why a particular tragedy happened.
- Never pressure participants to describe trauma publicly.
- Discuss beliefs honestly without expecting any participant to represent an entire community.
