Living the Gospel Among Our Neighbors · Session 14 of 14
Witness through ordinary faithfulness
Step 1
Read
Matthew 5:13–16; 1 Thessalonians 4:9–12
Use your preferred translation.
How do work, generosity, apology, and care make our profession of faith credible?
Step 2
Observe
- What does the passage say? Restate it in your own words before interpreting it.
- Who is speaking, and to whom?
- What is the surrounding context — what comes just before and after?
- Which words or phrases repeat or stand out?
Step 3
Discuss
- Jesus says others will see good works and glorify the Father. Why the Father rather than us?
- Paul urges believers to live quietly and work with their hands. Why would that matter for witness?
- How can inconsistency between profession and conduct damage witness? How can honest apology repair it?
Step 4
Apply
Which part of your ordinary life most needs to match what you say you believe?
Step 5
Practice
Do your daily work this week with extra care, as an offering to God.
Step 6
Pray
Ask God to make your ordinary life a faithful witness to Him.
Facilitator notes
- Invite participation without requiring personal disclosure.
- Let people disagree respectfully.
- Avoid speculation about someone’s salvation or explaining why a particular tragedy happened.
- Never pressure participants to describe trauma publicly.
- Discuss beliefs honestly without expecting any participant to represent an entire community.
