Living the Gospel Among Our Neighbors · Session 9 of 14
Partiality, poverty, and access
Step 1
Read
James 2:1–17; Leviticus 19:9–18
Use your preferred translation.
Who receives less care because they lack status, money, documents, or useful connections?
Step 2
Observe
- What does the passage say? Restate it in your own words before interpreting it.
- Who is speaking, and to whom?
- What is the surrounding context — what comes just before and after?
- Which words or phrases repeat or stand out?
Step 3
Discuss
- James describes two visitors treated differently. What does the favoritism reveal about the community’s values?
- Leviticus 19 tells farmers to leave the edges of their fields. What does that practice build into ordinary work?
- James says faith without works is dead. How does that connect to how we treat the poor?
Step 4
Apply
Where in your church, workplace, or neighborhood are some people overlooked? What could you do about it?
Step 5
Practice
Find out what a local ministry or agency serving people in need actually needs, and provide some of it.
Step 6
Pray
Ask God to remove partiality from your heart and to make you generous with your margins.
Facilitator notes
- Invite participation without requiring personal disclosure.
- Let people disagree respectfully.
- Avoid speculation about someone’s salvation or explaining why a particular tragedy happened.
- Never pressure participants to describe trauma publicly.
- Discuss beliefs honestly without expecting any participant to represent an entire community.
