Faith Under Pressure · Session 9 of 14
Forgiveness after real harm
Step 1
Read
Romans 12:17–21; Colossians 3:12–15
Use your preferred translation.
How can forgiveness coexist with truth, boundaries, and consequences?
Step 2
Observe
- What does the passage say? Restate it in your own words before interpreting it.
- Who is speaking, and to whom?
- What is the surrounding context — what comes just before and after?
- Which words or phrases repeat or stand out?
Step 3
Discuss
- Paul says “never avenge yourselves” but “leave it to the wrath of God.” How does trusting God’s justice make forgiveness possible?
- Romans 12:18 says “so far as it depends on you.” What does that phrase acknowledge?
- What is the difference between forgiving someone and pretending the harm did not happen?
Step 4
Apply
Is there a harm you are carrying where forgiveness feels impossible? What would one small step toward it be — even only in prayer?
Step 5
Practice
Pray each day this week for the good of someone who has hurt you, without needing to contact them.
Step 6
Pray
Ask God for grace to release vengeance to Him while you keep speaking truthfully about what happened.
Facilitator notes
- Invite participation without requiring personal disclosure.
- Let people disagree respectfully.
- Avoid speculation about someone’s salvation or explaining why a particular tragedy happened.
- Never pressure participants to describe trauma publicly.
- Discuss beliefs honestly without expecting any participant to represent an entire community.
