Faith Under Pressure · Session 8 of 14
Failure, confession, and repair
Step 1
Read
Psalm 51; Luke 19:1–10; James 5:16
Use your preferred translation.
What distinguishes repentance from explaining why we meant well?
Step 2
Observe
- What does the passage say? Restate it in your own words before interpreting it.
- Who is speaking, and to whom?
- What is the surrounding context — what comes just before and after?
- Which words or phrases repeat or stand out?
Step 3
Discuss
- David says, “Against you, you only, have I sinned.” Does this deny harm done to others, or name its deepest dimension? Discuss carefully.
- Zacchaeus offers specific restitution. What does that show about how repentance relates to repair?
- James connects confession to one another with healing. Why might confession to people matter, not only to God?
Step 4
Apply
Is there someone you have wronged and owe a plain apology, without explanation or defense?
Step 5
Practice
Make one specific apology or act of repair this week, as simply and honestly as you can.
Step 6
Pray
Ask God for a clean heart and for courage to make right what you can.
Facilitator notes
- Invite participation without requiring personal disclosure.
- Let people disagree respectfully.
- Avoid speculation about someone’s salvation or explaining why a particular tragedy happened.
- Never pressure participants to describe trauma publicly.
- Discuss beliefs honestly without expecting any participant to represent an entire community.
