Living the Gospel Among Our Neighbors · Session 11 of 14
Authority and faithful refusal
Step 1
Read
Romans 13:1–7; Acts 5:27–32; Daniel 6
Use your preferred translation.
How do we honor legitimate authority while refusing commands that contradict obedience to God?
Step 2
Observe
- What does the passage say? Restate it in your own words before interpreting it.
- Who is speaking, and to whom?
- What is the surrounding context — what comes just before and after?
- Which words or phrases repeat or stand out?
Step 3
Discuss
- Romans 13 describes authorities as God’s servants. What purpose does Paul say they serve?
- The apostles say, “We must obey God rather than men.” What exactly were they commanded, and what did they refuse?
- Daniel continued praying as before. How was his refusal both firm and respectful?
Step 4
Apply
Are there ways you dishonor legitimate authority? Are there commands you have obeyed that you should have questioned?
Step 5
Practice
Pray specifically for your local and national leaders by name this week.
Step 6
Pray
Ask God for respect toward those in authority and for courage to obey Him first.
Facilitator notes
- Invite participation without requiring personal disclosure.
- Let people disagree respectfully.
- Avoid speculation about someone’s salvation or explaining why a particular tragedy happened.
- Never pressure participants to describe trauma publicly.
- Discuss beliefs honestly without expecting any participant to represent an entire community.
